We’ve been busy! Hence why the delay in getting this update to you but do have a read and look at what we’ve been up to and have planned!
We hit the ground running with a hugely successful instrumental concert for family and friends featuring 47 (!) pupils! See photo below…
Verity took Junior Choir to the 02 for the Young Voices project.
We had a 4 week programme of singing activities for Cerise Class with parent Suzi Zumpe who also happens to sing with The Royal Opera as co-founder and joint artistic director of the Royal Opera House’s Youth Opera Company!
KS1 and 2 focused on African drumming, EYFS on learning songs and playing instruments, 1 by Ivor Cutler who taught me when I was in Primary School!
Pupils not already learning instruments outside of school or taking up the guitar, violin and woodwind lessons taught peripatetically within school are offered free piano lessons on Mondays – 47 pupils take up the opportunity. See photo!
Byron Gold, our wonderful singing teacher takes over running Junior Choir (aka “Jay-C”) from Verity and continues working on the Music Icons project.
2 instrumental ensembles are created – one made of children in years 3 and 4 called “Free Thor!”,
the other pupils of years 5 & 6 called “Fix” (get it?!)
Fuchsia Class attend singing workshop days at the South Bank in conjunction with VoiceLab and facilitated by Suzi Zumpe.
The London Symphony Orchestra’s Take Note project featuring guitar pupils from BL led by Daniel Nash culminates in a spectacular performance along with Hackney Youth Orchestra at Stoke Newington Town Hall.
Barney takes over from Mel running infant choir of reception, Y1 and Y2 children – this choir is named “Big Ideas” and starts working towards a performance.
Fuchsia Class get to showcase the learning they experienced in the VoiceLab project days from February.
Year 5 travelled to Shoreditch Town Hall to hear a fabulous performance by Apollo Music Projects bringing live classical music to children, taking them on a journey from a first experience of live performance in the classroom to the thrilling spectacle of a full orchestra in concert.
KS2 Pupils are given the opportunity to join Hackney Borough Youth Choir and offered flyers with information on how to join this choir. Registration forms available from Barney. A pupil is put forward for the London Mayor’s Music Award, more children take up the opportunities to learn violin, guitar, piano and saxophone in school and all extra-curricular musical activities (of which there are EIGHT per week on top of lessons for every single class from Nursery to Year 6!) continue.
Barney registers Jay-C for Young Voices 2016 – performing in the 02 Arena in January 2016!
On May 22nd our singing teacher Byron Gold is running a choir concert with each year group performing songs in a performance titled Musical Icons! See Poster!
June: Following on from our lovely instrumental concert way back in January select instrumentalists and Big Ideas will be entertaining parents and staff at the school BBQ (more details tbc nearer the time!). We will also be working hard to squeeze in some much-needed post-SATS first rehearsals for the Year 6 end-of-year show!
July: the final push and a Year 6 show to round the academic year off! I will of course be updating parents and carers nearer this time on any summer activities involving music.
