Dear Parents and Carers,

It’s been a very busy but beautifully sunny week at Betty Layward! I hope you enjoyed your bank holiday!

This week has seen some exciting school trips, including a visit to the Vue cinema in Angel on Thursday where Year 5 watched The Jungle Book, which is the current text they are studying in class. They really enjoyed it and it definitely inspired their writing. Linnea shared her Jungle Book writing at our Star of the Week assembly this morning! Amazing work, well done!

Year 1 visited the Museum of Childhood on Friday to support their topic of Toys, it was great fun, thank you to the many parent helpers for coming along. If you would like to help out on a school trip or with volunteer within school, please speak to Max who can begin the process of getting a DBS check done.

On Wednesday and Thursday, our Nursery children took a trip to our local Post Office! They experienced posting a letter and spoke with the staff! Thank you to the Nursery team for organising.

On Thursday, Peter led an assembly for KS2 on the local elections and children learnt about the main differences between parties based on their policies. I am always impressed with how BL children are so aware of political happenings and world news.

I had a wonderful afternoon today when I met with children from every class for ‘Tea with the Headteacher’. We had tea, juice and biscuits to celebrate their wonderful work, attitude or behaviour this week! See picture! I look forward to spending quality time with more of our superb children next Friday!

Our Year 6 children take their SATs tests next week and we are so proud of how they have worked this year, we are sure they will all do their best and we will be proud of their results. We see SATs as simply a way of children demonstrating and showing off all they know, and we want them to feel relaxed and excited about doing so! We will hold breakfast every morning (Mon-Thur) next week from 8am in Daniel House for all children to attend, should they wish.

Well done to all of our Stars of the Week this week (see picture!) and to Tom, Martha, Rosa-May and Linnea who shared their superb writing with us in assembly! Inspirational work!

Mel McHugh has been holding coffee mornings every Wednesday in Daniel House from 930am. The aim is to build our links with parents from across the community. We are looking to hold Turkish coffee mornings in response to requests. We will produce a published timetable of what each meeting with be about for next year and they will include workshops on how to help your child, courses such as First Aid and less formal opportunities to meet other parents and build relationships.

If you have ideas for this or would like to get involved please contact Mel on MMcHugh@bettylayward.hackney.sch.uk .

As we approach the summer months, please remember to apply sun cream to your child and provide them with a sun hat when the weather gets hotter!

Have a lovely weekend!

Verity Carter, Acting Headteacher
