Dear Parents and Carers,

I hope you’ve had a great week!

On Monday I did an assembly on current news and we discussed the very important subject of Eurovision! As always our BL children were aware of current news topics and were able to articulate their views on whether the Ukraine should have won!

On Tuesday Year 4 Cerise class went to a recording studio in Dalston, as Fuchsia did last week, to watch how songs are recorded and put together. The children were incredibly well behaved and loved the trip! Huge thanks to Barney for arranging this and for sharing his passion for music so brilliantly with the school.

KS1 took their SATs tests this week and all tried their best, which is all we ask. We are proud of all of the students; and thank all of the Year 2 teaching team for their hard work this year.

I’ve seen some superb learning behaviours and exciting lessons this week across the school. In Nursery I enjoyed listening to the diagnosis of various children who were dressed up as doctors! In Year 2 children have been enjoying doing lots of Art this week amongst the SATs and have created some fantastic sketches of mini beasts. In Year 3 children have been learning about the difference between fossils and bones, and they have been studying various fossils in preparation for their trip to the Natural History Museum! In Year 4 I enjoyed listening to Fuchsia and Cerise during their Philosophy 4 Children session. I especially enjoyed hearing how they refer to one another’s points when delivering their own. Superb social skills being developed! In Year 6 children found out the musical they will be performing at the end of the year and are already hugely excited about it! I also watched them create E-Books on Mayan culture. Fascinating!

On Thursday, our Year 3s went to the Natural History Museum to learn all about fossils and had an amazing time! Thank you to Carly and Briony for organising and to our wonderful parent helpers!

Next week 12 of our Year 5 children go off to Madrid for a week with Jason, Helen, Bibi and Clare. They will have an incredible time. We will send parents a daily message with info and upload any pictures of the children onto our website for you to see. http://bettylayward.hackney.sch.uk/modern-foreign-languages-mfl/

A letter has gone out today about a Dad/Step Dad/Uncle/Grandad/Brother or significant male day at BL! We warmly invite any male relatives of our children into school on June 17th to enjoy watching their child in their classroom environment, seeing some teaching, looking at their relative’s books and getting to know what it is like to be a pupil at Betty Layward. Please see the letter for further details. We will of course be holding a significant female day later in the term!

We’ve had so many sporting activities and competitions this week from the John Larter football tournament to the Red Tennis tournament. A massive thank you as ever to Simon, Warren and Ed who coach our children so brilliantly and are always looking for opportunities for them to engage in!

Have a lovely, safe and happy weekend! Let’s hope it stays dry!
