Maths

Our Maths curriculum aims to teach children to master key concepts. We have a strong commitment to develop sufficient fluency and depth of understanding so learning is sustainable over time and can be built on something the children have already mastered. The ability to reason about a concept, make connections and form generalisations – not only promotes the enjoyment of mathematics but also requires an in depth understanding. The use of carefully crafted questions with gradual variation encourages the children to make links and spot patterns.

At Betty Layward we aim to develop fluency in number through a sound conceptual knowledge of place value, the rapid recall of times tables up to 12 (by the end of year 4) and applying this to create related multiplication and division facts. Throughout the school the children are exposed to conceptual ideas at a concrete level with a range of apparatus (e.g. counters, beads, diennes and Numicon) before moving on pictorial representations. This may mean diagrams, sketches or using the Singapore bar model to solve problems. Doing so develops children’s deep conceptual understanding and skills proficiency which supports the next move into abstract mathematics, such as long division.

We strive to develop children’s’ confidence and efficiency in maths and our teaching-learning approach steers the children towards ‘mastery’ -where the focus is on creating as many relationships and links between the skills and concepts as possible – depth as opposed to acceleration.

Maths Parent Workshop 

Thank you to all those parents and carers that attended the KS1 Maths workshop. It is great to see so many of you involved with the children’s learning.
