Betty Layward benefits from a designated art room where the children enjoy classes with a specialist teacher who is also a practicing artist. Every child from Nursery through to Year 6 has access to weekly art sessions on a rotational basis.
The curriculum delivered is designed to develop knowledge, practical skills and understanding across a range of creative disciplines including graphics, fine art, textiles and design.
Art at Betty Layward encourages self-expression, experimentation and investigation through schemes of work that sit upon a foundation of the formal elements that make meaningful connections with cultural and contemporary practitioners. The children are supported to work with confidence and use an imaginative approach as each year builds progressively through the key stages in preparation for secondary education.
An extra-curricular programme of activities and creative intervention group work also run to support the individual needs of the children at Betty Layward. It is an incredibly creative school and we are fortunate to have artistically enthusiastic children, staff and parents on board who make the art room an exciting place to learn.
Experimental mark-making using everyday tools.

Year 5
Superb use of blocking-in and use of outline to make an interesting piece showing a real understanding of the graphic techniques explored in this project inspired by artist and illustrator Jon Burgerman.
Year 5
Another brilliant graphic piece by Year 5. This would also look amazing down the side of a building. Great use of black to make the design really stand out.
Year 4 Owl Drawings
A selection of the amazing tonal drawings by Year 4 that show a real understanding of mark-making and tone with pencil. These look great in the art room and receive many compliments.
Year 5 started their Jon Burgerman mural design by creating individual characters. They look great up on the wall.
Year 4 Owl Drawings
Just look at the detail in these drawings! Beautiful use of line to add texture, detail and tone,
Year 6 have explored the work of artist and architect Hundertwasser to create their own streets full of pattern and detail using oil and water based media. I love the way that they are all different but work brilliantly together.
Year 4 masks for our Black History Month Carnival Art Exhibition. Brilliant use of colour to add a theatrical feel!
Mardi Gras inspired mask designs created using ink and embellished with glitter created by our ACC Art Group that takes place after school on a Monday and Tuesday. These fantastic pieces were made by children in Year 2 right through to Year 6 and were a wonderful addition to the Black History Month Exhibition.
A Year 4 piece of work that explores how we can use our imagination to create a new animal. Excellent use of detail and pattern that gives this cheetah a strange and surreal twist.
In Year 1 we looked at traditional tribal African masks and created our own pieces with a carnival flavour by adding bright colours and decorative pattern.
This term in art Year 2 have been exploring camouflage and how some animals use their natural habitats to hide from predators. Using their knowledge of warm colours and blending techniques we created this amazing snake that likes to hide in orange trees!
In Year 2 art we have been looking at camouflage and how some animals can blend in to their natural habitats using the colour, pattern and texture to do so, Each class worked collaboratively to create a snake that lives in an orange tree. Using their knowledge of warm colours and blending skills the children used oil pastels to create the snake and the tree. This sits just outside the art room and really brightens up the corridor in Daniel House. Great work Peach! Word has it that Apricot has one just like it making its way over to the main school building so keep your eyes peeled!
We have been making full use of our specialist art room this year in Daniel House which has been up and running since January. After much creative hard work from the children, the walls are finally covered in artwork that reflect the talents of the pupils here at Betty Layward. Here are a few examples of what they have been producing over the last two terms with many of the pieces having taken a great deal of time and patience. I am very proud and really impressed. Well done to you all!
