All parents, guardians or carers of children who attend the school automatically become members of the PTFA and so do all teaching and non-teaching staff. That means we have almost 1000 members at any one time.
We hold fundraising events throughout the year such as the summer and winter fairs, jumble sales, a quiz, raffles, Christmas cards and cake sales. Over the last few years we have raised an average of £10,000 per annum and have provided books, coach hire for residential trips, theatre visits, musical instruments, nursery equipment, ICT resources, a PA system, sports kits, the year 6 book and paid for work on the woodlands.
An important part of our work is bringing people together. We do this through the events we organise and we always encourage everybody to get involved as it is such a great way to get to know staff and other parents. It is also important that our children see their parents and teachers uniting to make their school the best it can possibly be. It teaches them about the power of volunteering and demonstrates the amazing things that can be achieved when everybody contributes in whatever way they can.
We hold regular meetings, usually one a term, including the Annual General Meeting every autumn, where we elect the Chair, Treasurer and Secretary. These meetings are used to provide advice, distribute information, plan fundraising, authorise expenditure and to discuss any issues of policy. All parents and staff are welcome at the meetings and minutes are available on the website.
Each class at Betty Layward has a PTFA class representative. Some classes have co-reps. The role of the class reps is to disseminate information about what the PTFA is doing and to encourage parents and staff to get involved in activities and events. We also have two staff reps.
